bare night is best
The passenger seat. Blood, undistracted, surges
in the waterways of your streets. Lay
your body down in the car, outside day.
Watch as night fills deep with a starry urge.
The road carries you unlit, where no hurt
touches memoryâs chapped hands. They stay
cleansed within the blackness of your bay,
the darkened sky completing its purge.
The horizon unfolds like a cup you drained
and left upon a table. The city you left
surrounded you, a wrought iron fence
pressing house and home to your name.
Driving away, you almost feel bereft â
sunless, moonless, all defences down.
